Field Epidemiology Training Programs

Field Epidemiology Training Programs (FETPs) strengthen countries’ ability to detect, investigate, and respond to public health threats. Established by the U.S. CDC in 1980, FETPs operate globally using a learning-by-doing approach in which residents spend around 75% of their training conducting real fieldwork.

Field Epidemiology Training Programs (FETPs) strengthen countries’ ability to detect, investigate, and respond to public health threats. Established by the U.S. CDC in 1980, FETPs operate globally using a learning-by-doing approach in which residents spend around 75% of their training conducting real fieldwork. Programs are tailored to national priorities and delivered through the three established modalities:

 

  • FETP- Advanced (2 years)
  • FETP-Intermediate (1 year)
  • FETP-Frontline (3 months)

 

FETP graduates reinforce national surveillance systems, support outbreak detection and response, and provide ministries of health with a trained workforce capable of managing urgent and routine public health challenges.

 

EMPHNET partners with the U.S. CDC and ministries of health to establish, strengthen, and sustain FETPs across the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR), ensuring programs respond to country needs and maintain high-quality standards.

 

Country Programs
The Field Epidemiology Training Program of Afghanistan was launched as a joint effort of the Afghanistan National Public Health Institute, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and EMPHNET.
AFGHANISTAN
With the support from the Biosecurity Engagement Program, GHD|EMPHNET helped establish the Veterinary Field Epidemiology Training Program in Bangladesh.
BANGLADESH

EGYPT
The Field Epidemiology Training Program of Iraq was first established in its advanced modality, a two-year postgraduate program affiliated with the University of Baghdad and the Baghdad College of Medicine.
IRAQ
The Field Epidemiology Training Program of Jordan aims to improve reporting and surveillance systems, prepare the country for outbreak investigations, and address trends for communicable and non-communicable diseases.
JORDAN
Lebanon’s FETP is one the most recently launched programs in the Eastern Mediterranean Region. he program was launched in the basic modality, also known as the Public Health Empowerment Program. 
LEBANON
In 2023, the National Center for Disease Control in Libya, with support from EMPHNET, launched the Public Health Empowerment Program-Basic Field Epidemiology to enhance the surveillance capacity of health workers at the national level.

The Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Program of Pakistan was established to enhance national capacity in disease surveillance and outbreak response in line with the International Health Regulations. 
PAKISTAN
The Qatar Ministry of Public Health established its FETP in the basic modality to accelerate the progress towards sustaining a national public health workforce capable of preventing and responding to various public health emergencies.
QATAR
The first Field Epidemiology Training Program to be established in the Eastern Mediterranean Region, the program of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has made important contributions to the national public health system over the years.
SAUDI ARABIA
The Federal Ministry of Health in Sudan partnered with GHD|EMPHNET to establish the country’s Field Epidemiology Training Program to improve surveillance and public health response to outbreaks and emergencies in the country.
