Pakistan FETP

Overview

Established in 2006, the Pakistan Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Program (FELTP) – now known as the Pakistan Field Epidemiology Training Program (FETP) – is a joint initiative of the National Institute of Health (NIH), Islamabad, the Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination, and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The program was accredited by TEPHINET in 2019, and ownership was officially transferred to the Government of Pakistan in December 2021, at which point it was renamed to Pakistan FETP.

Pakistan FETP strengthens the country’s capacity in disease surveillance, outbreak response, and public health workforce development in alignment with the International Health Regulations (IHR 2005). In collaboration with the University of Health Sciences (UHS) Lahore, the program awards an MSc in Field Epidemiology.

In 2016, the program launched its Basic modality, known as the Public Health Empowerment Program – Basic Field Epidemiology (PHEP-BFE), a three-month in-service training targeting public health workers engaged in surveillance and response across all levels of the health system.

COVID-19 Response:

Supported national efforts in contact tracing, case investigation, and rapid response
Disseminated case definitions and contributed to case-based and sero-epidemiological surveys
Provided capacity building for the national health workforce

Flood Response (2022):

Teams deployed to flood-affected districts in Sindh and Balochistan, training local staff on surveillance and data management

Surveillance System Integration:

Fellows embedded in Disease Surveillance and Response Units (DSRUs)
Supported weekly surveillance data shared from provinces to the federal DSRU at NIH
