Overview  

 

The Yemen Field Epidemiology Training Program was first established in Sanaa in 2011 to strengthen the country’s public health system by addressing critical shortages in trained epidemiologists capable of responding to the complex public health challenges arising from Yemen’s prolonged humanitarian crisis. 

 

In March 2022, the program expanded to Aden, further enhancing national capacity for outbreak detection, disease surveillance, and rapid response.

 

A significant milestone was achieved in November 2024, when a ministerial decree established the Yemen National Public Health Institute (Y-NPHI), under which the FETP now operates as a core institutional component. Through this integration, the program continues to build national resilience by training a new generation of field epidemiologists capable of leading Yemen’s recovery and health security efforts.

 

 Key Achievements

 

  • Program Scale-Up:
    • 5 Public Health Empowerment Program / Basic Field Epidemiology (PHEP/BFE) cohorts completed (105 graduates)
    • 2 Intermediate cohorts completed (31 graduates)
    • 3rd Intermediate cohort launched in April 2025, expected to complete in December 2025
  • Institutionalization: FETP formally integrated into Y-NPHI in November 2024
  • Regional Learning and Exchange:
    • 2 mentors participated in EMPHNET mentorship workshop in Amman, 2022
    • 2 graduates attended the EMPHNET Case Study Workshop in Amman, May 4–8, 2025
    • 2 residents joined the Jordan–Yemen EMPHNET Exchange Program in July 2025
  • Forward Plan
    • Launch of One Health FETP and One Health Rapid Response Team (RRT)
    • Nationwide RRT capacity-building initiative
    • Development of a 2025–2030 strategic plan
    • Engagement with external funding partners, including the Pandemic Fund
