EMPHNET Conducts an Interactive Workshop on Child Mental Well-being

As childhood is a crucial period for developing social and emotional habits that are important for mental well-being, it becomes imperative to raise awareness regarding the mental health of children. This awareness is significant, considering that mentally healthy children have a positive quality of life, enabling them to function effectively at home, in school, and within their communities.

 

Consequently, on November 13, 2023, EMPHNET commenced a three-day workshop titled “ Screening for Child Mental Health and Behavioral Issues,” in collaboration with the University of Geneva. This workshop was specifically tailored to community health workers at Azraq Camp, Jordan. It aimed to enhance the capabilities of these health workers, and to equip them with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively examine children’s mental health and behavioral issues. It was also an opportunity for them to engage in role-plays and practice screening techniques in order to enhance their skills.

 

In addition, this interactive workshop focused on recognizing and addressing the common children’s mental health disorders including; anxiety, depression, Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and Conduct Disorders, as well as their associated signs and symptoms. Moreover, the workshop highlighted the evidence-based screening tools and techniques to identify children’s mental health and behavioral concerns.

 

 The Director of EMPHNET’s Center of Excellence for Applied Epidemiology, Dr. Yousef Khader, led this workshop by providing the participants with practical guidance on administering screenings, and on Interpreting and documenting screening results.

 

In conclusion, EMPHNET's initiative to address children’s mental health highlight the organization's commitment to community well-being. Also, investing in the education and skill development of community health workers will pave the way for a more informed approach to children’s mental health needs.
