EMPHNET Holds High-Level Meeting on Strengthening Women’s Cancer Prevention and Control in Iraq

On February 26, 2026, in collaboration with the Iraqi Ministry of Health, EMPHNET convened a high-level meeting to advance women’s cancer prevention and control in Iraq.

 

The meeting was attended by high-level delegates from Iraq, including Dr. Khamis Ali Al-Saad, Administrative Undersecretary of the Iraqi Ministry of Health, representing the Minister of Health; Dr. Tahseen Al-Rubaie, Secretary-General of the Iraqi Cancer Council; Dr. Hanaa Emmanuel, Director General of the Woman's Affairs Department at the Presidency and other senior representatives from government and regional public health organizations.

 

This event is part of a large-scale initiative that demonstrates EMPHNET’s ongoing support to the Ministry of Health in strengthening prevention, early detection, and evidence-based decision-making for women’s cancers. Building on last year’s work, which focused on in-depth stakeholder consultations, contextual understanding, engagement with technical experts, and initiating awareness efforts, this year’s meeting set a clearer strategic direction with more structured and coordinated activities, reinforcing sustainability and innovation.

 

During the meeting, participants explored strategies to strengthen awareness campaigns, improve coordination among national and regional stakeholders, optimize the use of data to inform policy and program decisions, and promote sustainable approaches to prevention in line with the MoH’s strategic priorities.

 

“The Ministry of Health reaffirms its commitment to strengthening the prevention and control of cancer, while steadily advancing a national strategy that prioritizes both early detection and comprehensive cancer care,” said Dr. Ali Al-Saad, Administrative Undersecretary of the Iraqi MoH.

 

“This initiative aligns closely with global commitments toward cancer prevention and cervical cancer elimination, and reflects our collective responsibility to translate global guidance into context-appropriate national action,” said Dr. Saifaldein Saleh, EMPHNET’s Technical Advisor.

 

In conclusion, EMPHNET expressed its appreciation to the Iraqi Ministry of Health for its leadership and continued engagement in shaping cancer prevention strategies, emphasizing the value of sustained partnership, coordinated action, and evidence-based approaches to strengthen the prevention and control of women’s cancers across Iraq.
